We drove from Tuscon to Silver City where we stayed an extra day and rented a car so we could drive up to the the Gila Cliff Dwellings and do a little touring around the countryside. The Cliff dwellings were awesome, but not the ones we thought they were. We think those must be in CO so guess that will be on the next trip. Climbing to the Cliff Dwelings was quite the chore with my clogged up lungs, to say nothing of the high altitude, but we made it huffing and puffing. It's only about a 1/2 mile, but it's practically straight up....or so it felt! We lucked out in getting a ranger who had no one else to deal with so he pretty much gave us a personalized tour and tons of information. It was awesome.
This morning we headed for Roswell, but only made it to Ruidoso because we got hung up at White Sands National Park. It was so beautiful and so amazing to drive through. I lucked out and found the one living creature (thanks to Fred's eagle eye) a white lizzard. Watch carefully or you'll miss it when I post the pictures. He's practically invisible, which is how things survive out there.
We've heard Roswell is pretty well booked up so may not spend the night. It's only about an hour from here so that might be ok. We aren't sure what we're looking to see there, but our friends Lani and Rich wanted a souvenir and we are bound and determined to find it for them. From there we head off to Carlsbad Caverns. A little concern there as they've had monsoon rain storms the last couple of days and there was some serious flooding. We've heard the Caverns are still open and we REALLY want to see them so will take our chances.
From Carlsbad it's pretty much a straight shot to San Antonio, with a few side trips around that area. Unfortunately if I haven't kicked this cold by the time we get to San Antonio we wont visit with Ruth, my former partner, Ruth Hamann. She would not appreciate us showing up and leaving her my cold.
