Tyler, TX to Santa Fe, NM

It's been a fascinating journey so far.  Just watching the landscape change from flat as the eye can see to hilly and then plateau's and finally mountains has been a great gauge for how far we've come.  There's a lot of nothing out there, between cities though, especially in Texas.  I use to think I'd like to take Route 66 from one end to the other, but the few times we've been on it for this trip it's been sad and depressing.  What was once thriving areas is now sprinkled with abandoned or struggling businesses.  Not too much quaintness left now, which is sad because it really is a part of our history.
Driving yesterday through Texas the wind was blowing so hard Fred had to hang on to the steering wheel tight the whole time.  It made for an exhausting day.  We stopped at the Cadillac Ranch, but sadly it was not quite what I was expecting.  Someone leaving gave us a can of spray paint so we did put our initials on one of the cars.  The field next to the cars are loaded with discarded spray cans.  Sort of sad to see because the fields actually looked like they did get plowed from the grooves in them.  Must be hard on the tractors.  We spent the night in Tucumcari, NM in one of those older RV parks on Route 66.  Probably the worse place we've stayed in so far, but we were grateful to get off the road and relax.  Skip the amenities and the facilities this time around!
Drove to Santa Fe today and the terrain just got prettier and prettier.  It also got colder...the temps dropped 20 degrees today and by tonight it will be 32!  While we were wandering around Santa Fe it actually snowed for about 10 minutes.  They are predicting more snow tonight, but hopefully not much.
We're having some problems with our brakes so tomorrow we'll go to the shop.  We would highly recommend the Trailer Ranch RV Resort in Santa Fe.  Not only is it a nice place, the folks are very helpful.  Turns out the guy at the front desk use to work at the Ford dealer for 15 years so he called and got us an appointment tomorrow morning!  AND, you can actually catch a bus right out front and take it to Olde Town.  We lucked out and found an RV parking lot right in the Olde Town area, but there are only a couple of spots so being here off season was the key to being able to park right in town.
